Summary
The German Gen. Prittwitz was replaced after failing to make headway against the Russian 1st & 2nd Armies by Gen. Paul von Hindenberg with Ludendorf as Chief of Staff.
This partnership planned to delay the 1st Army, while shattering the 2nd, then return and destroy the 1st. This they achieved and dealt the Russian a blow from which they never quite recovered.
