Summary
The opinion, based on encounters to date, which the French held of the Spaniards was that they were ill-disciplined, poorly armed and mostly irregular troops. Although outnumbered two to one General Marchand, commanding the French Vl Corps in Ney's absence, expected to beat them easily. The attack by the Spanish vanguard upset the French equillibrium which they never regained.
