Summary
After loosing his supply train to Jackson's fast approaching troops at Front Royal, Banks' main Union forces reached Winchester and turned to fight. It was a hopeless cause. Gen. 'Stonewall' Jackson's men, footsore and exhausted after their break-neck march through the Shenandoah Valley, crashed into less than half their number of Yankee defenders. The Union troops put up a brief resistance before breaking and heading for the safety of the Potomac River.
