Summary
The Austrian commander, Baron von Jellacic, was belatedly moving to rejoin Archduke John's army at Graz. He had detached his cavalry and artillery as being of no use in the mountains. His force was caught by Grenier's division of the Army of Italy and lost over two thirds of the men as killed, wounded or captured.
