Summary
The Russians attempted to take Balaclava and were prevented by a mainly British hastily organized defence. Two of the three significant elements have entered the national psyche, namely the Thin Red Line [the 93rd Highlanders] who stopped the initial infantry advance and the Charge of the Light Brigade which destroyed the British light cavalry. The third event was the charge of the Heavy Brigade who routed a force of Russian cavalry four times their number. Balaclava was not taken but the Russian gained control of the Causeway Heights which controlled the main road out of Balaclava.
