Summary
The opening engagement of the Eastern Front.
One corps of the German 8th Army under von Francois ignored orders to wait behind prepared positions and attacked the southern flank of the Russian 1st Army, moving west towards the Königsberg fortified area. One Russian division was driven back and 3,000 prisoners taken but the majority of the Russian forces were not affected.
