Summary
On the death of Charles II of Spain in 1700 Louis XIV of France had his grandson [great -grandson of Philip IV of Spain] proclaimed Philip V. The extension of the power of France was strongly opposed by other European powers chief among them being William of Orange and the Hapsburg Emperor Leopold I
The 'other powers' formed a Grand Alliance against Louis.
The first military move was the French occupation of the Spanish Netherlands.
The war ended without a descisive victor but with a compromise spelt out in the treaties of Utrecht [April 1713] Baden [March 1714] and Rastatt [Septembner 1714.
