Summary
Overnight snow fell, and attacks which went forward at zero hour, 0610hrs, did so in swirling sleet and a smoke screen which was blown wildly about. In a great deal of confusion the units suffered heavy losses. Suprisingly some gains were made and, with the help of the R.E. Field companies, some were consolidated. By the end of the day the sleet had turned into rain, the ground was turning into a sea of mud which, with II and V Corps no longer fit to fight, put an end to the battle of the Somme.
