Summary
The French fleet were threatening an invasion of England. Edward led the English fleet in an attack on the French who were gathered in the port of Sluys. The French could not manoeuvre to take advantage of their greater numbers and they were overwhelmingly defeated. Sluys is a classic example of medieval naval tactics where the ships formed a floating battlefield on which 'normal' land based tactics were used.
