Summary
Napoleon was aware that the Turks were assembling an army to challenge his occupation of Egypt. To forestall their advance he attempted to capture Acre a key fortress in Palestine. The determination of the Turkish defenders aided by Sir Sydney Smith's squadron replused the French attacks. Napoleon finally withdrew suffering his first defeat in a major operation of war.
