Summary
Charles l held a defensive position with his right flank on the river Kennet, his centre on Shaw House and his left on Donnington Castle. The Parliamentarians outnumbered him almost two to one but poor command lead to uncoordinated attacks. Both sides felt they had lost the battle. The Royalist retreat to Oxford and the Parliamentarians to Reading.
