Summary
The British and French failed to follow up their success on the Alma with a swift assault on the city. Instead they opted for a 'seige' which for most of the year allowed the Russians free access from the north and the east of Sebastopol. The city was subjected to heavy bombardment and key points of defence eventually were taken in a series of assaults ending successfully on the 8th of September1855. On the 9th September the Russians blew up their magazines and abandoned the city.
