Summary
The Prussian fortress was inadequately manned with only two thirds of the design number and many of those stragglers, invalids and volunteers. Of its 242 guns many of the gun carriages were rotten. Nearly a quarter of the men deserted, and 4,000 went into captivity. Ninety-seven officers were released on parole.
