During the night, Vice Adm. Mikawa sailed a cruiser task force down New Georgia Sound ('the Slot') and surprised an Allied force screening the amphibious support ships, sinking 4 Allied cruisers and one destroyer and suffering little damage in return. Also known as 'the Battle of the Five Sitting Ducks.
