In the course of the Turkish-Venetian War 1714-1718 Austria claimed that the Turks had broken the treaty which ended the Austro-Turkish war 1683-1699. The Austrians, under Prince Eugene, routed the Turks at the Battle of Peterwardein and later laid seige to Belgrade. The Austrians beat off a large Turkish relief army [16 August 1717] and Belgrade fell five days later [21st August 1717]. The war ended with the Treaty of Passarowitz 1718.
