Roman Occupation of Britain
War Name : Roman Occupation of Britain
Date(s) : 43 - 105
Summary
Exploratory invasions of 55BC and 54BC commanded by Julius Ceasar established the feasibility of the occupation of Britian. Trading in goods required by Rome with friendly tribes or through 'third persons' established the desirability of bringing Britain into the empire.
The invasion/occupation force of four legions and twenty thousand auxillary troops was under the overall command of Aulus Plautius. Vespasian, later to become emperor, commanded the Second, Augusta, Legion.
