Summary
Without a Swedish army in the field Peter and his Russian army was able to press the sieges of Riga, Vyborg and Reval concurrently. Field-Marshal Sheremetev was given command of 30,000 men and a massive amount of artillery, in the latter part of the siege Riga was pounded by 8,000 mortar shells. The gallant defenders were decimated by disease and famine and surrendered after eight months of resistance.
