Summary
Initial light screening of Ath began on the 16th September. Overkirk, as at Ostend, was given the command of the seige while Marlborough covered him with the main army at Leuze. The trenches were begun on the 20th and in spite of strong sorties especially on the 27th the seige progressed. On the 28th three sectors of the covered way were taken. On the 1st October the Governor sought terms, none were granted and the Garrison surrendered as prisoners-of-war on the 2nd October.
