Summary
Despite the Government troops under Cope taking up a strong position protected by the sea to the north, and marshes to the south, the Jacobite clansmen were led along a hidden pathway and their powerful charge was able to break upon Cope troops as they were forming up. The rout lasted not more than 10 minutes and greatly added to the Highlander's morale.
