Summary
Massena had decided to withdraw his Army of Portugal from its starving position before the Lines of Torres Vedras. He split his force into two columns, to make foraging easier, and Wellington chose to follow Ney's column. This action was a contact between Ney's rearguard and the Allies advanced units. Two companies of the 95 Foot [The Rifles] were engaged in this action.
