Summary
Montrose with his Royalist force reduced to about 600 was surprised by Leslie commanding the Covenanter army of 6000. In spite of the gallantry of the Royalists, especially Montrose leading the 100 cavalry the engagement was more of a massacre than a battle. Montrose was only saved by his friends leading him from the battlefield.
