Summary
An important victory for the Union in the Mississippi region. Curtis' Union troops, following Price into Arkansas after the Confederate defeat at Wilson's Creek, became aware of a strong Confederate force under Van Dorn coming to meet them. Curtis took up a defensive position around Pea Ridge overlooking Little Sugar Creek. A diversionary attack in the west combined with the main frontal attack to the east around Elkhorn Tavern by Van Dorns divisions gained some ground but by nightfall had failed to break Union lines. A counter-attack the following day by Gen Franz Seigel's 2 divisions broke the tired Confederates, forcing a retreat to the Arkansas River.
