Summary
Advance corps of Samsonov's 2nd Army advanced towards the Vistula without adequate reconnaissance and ran straight into the entrenched XX Corps. There was heavy fighting but the Russians were stopped, giving time for the weight of the German 8th Army to approach. The XX Corps fell back to Tannenberg to link up with them.
