The number, 24,000, of Portugese exaggrerates their strength. Only 4,500 were trained regular troops. Soult accurately assessed the situation and attacked in strength. The untrained mob of Portugese broke and ran. In addition to the troops losses the loss among the civillian population was extremely heavy.
