The Somali chieftain, Mohamed Bin Abdullah Hassan known as the Mad Mullah, waged an almost continuous set of small wars against the British, Italians and Ethopians in the protectorates of Somaliland and Abyssinia. His followers showed themselves very able desert warriors and were eventually granted a semi-independent territory in Italian Somaliland but his raids continued until his death in 1920.
