Summary
Vice-Admiral Sir George Ayscue with 38 ships made contacted with a similar sized Dutch fleet under Admiral De Ruyter which was escorting 50 outward bound merchant ships.
The English sank two of the warships and captured one. In spite of a pursuit the next day no more action took place.
