Summary
The fleets met off the North Foreland both formed into three squadrons. The battle lasted for three hours at full intensity with all ships being engaged. Dutch losses were considerably heavier than the English. The Dutch broke off the engagement and made for their own ports, the English ships still in a condition to pursue kept up a running fight until the Dutch reached the Wellings off Ostend.
