Norman Conqest of Southern Italy
War Name : Norman Conqest of Southern Italy
Date(s) : 1016 - 1130
Summary
From the first 'adventure' by forty knights to relieve Salerno from the Saracens in 1016 there was a gradual, though often bloody, extension of Norman rule through Southern Italy. The sack of Rome in 1084 was worse than that suffered at the hands of the Vandals. In due course Sicily and Malta were taken from the Saracens. The Pope recognized Roger II as King of Sicily, Malta and southern Italy in 1130.
