A strong Austrian force under Archduke Charles swung north and caught the French under Bernadotte. The French were forced to retreat northwest.

Archduke Charles repeated attempts to get Wartensleben to move south to link up with him proved in vain. Charles therefore decided to move north to make the link. Charles also swung his axis of supply eastwards rather than southwards.
