Summary
Charles I escaped his captivity in November 1647. He attempted to regain his throne through force of arms and successfully negotiated with the Scots to provide him with an army. The involvement of the Scots encouraged some enclaves of Royalist support to take up arms against Parliament.
All Royalist forces were defeated by the end of August 1648.
