Summary
Mid-September the advance guard of 8,000 Russians was in place to invest Narva. By 4th October 35,000 Russians were building trenches. The garrison was less than 2,000 fighting men. The Russians began their bombardment on the 4th November but it was ineffective. Two infantry assaults were easily repulsed by the defenders. The Swedish king, Charles XII, raised the siege by defeating the Russians at the battle of Narva.
