Summary
Sheridan reached Appomattox before Lee to cut him off. Lee sent Fitzhugh Lee and Gordon to engage the Union cavalry, but when Grant's infantry arrived and deployed for battle, Lee saw that the situation was hopeless and asked for terms.
To all intents and purposes, the war was over.
