Summary
This was a running battle with the Franco-Italian advanced guard being resisted by the Austrian rear guard. The Austrian defence was determined and hard fought so that their main body could effect its retreat over two river lines. The French gained the ground but the Austrians continued their reteat unhampered by close pursuit.
