Having avoided battle at Minsk, Bagration marched his 2nd Army south east before crossing the Beresina river and then turning to re-join Barclay de Tolly's 1st Army, thought to be to the North.
Following the Dnieper northwards, they encountered Davout's I Corps blocking the path. He attacked but the French positions held and Bagreation was forced to retire Eastwards.
