Summary
Even before 1587 English troops had been fighting the Spaniards in the Netherlands and English ships had attacked Spanish ships and colonies. The death of Philip of Spain in 1598 and of Elizabeth of England in 1603 removed the chief protagonists and enabled a peace treaty to be signed in 1604.
