Summary

The fortress of Menin was designed by Vauban and was commanded by Count Caraman. By 5th August the allied lines were complete and approach trenches were begun. By 9th August 40 cannon and 40 mortars were in action and other guns were on their way. The covered way was stormed on the 15th and a large breach was formed by the 21st. Before it was necessary to storm the breach the Governor surrendered on terms. The garrison was allowed to march out with full honours.
