Summary
5 Union ironclad gunboats, and 4 specially built rams under the command of Charles Ellet, the builder of the rams, advanced downstream towards the 8 Confederate gunboats defending Memphis. Townspeople lined the cliffs and riverbank to watch as the leading rams crashed into the rebel flotilla at 15 knots. The yankee gunboats followed on to finish the job, and only one rebel vessel escaped downstream. Memphis surrendered.
