Battle Name : Ivry

Date(s) : 14 March 1590

Part of : The French Wars of Religion ,

Outcome : A victory for Protestant Huguenot-Royalist army over Catholic League's Army

Type of battle : Land

Henry's Huguenot army met de Mayenne's larger Leaguer army on open, level ground, horse flanked by foot, and both sides began to advance into each other . The battle was hard-fought but Henry's better use of gunnery blunted the Catholic cavalry and his personally-led counter charge broke the Catholic centre. The Leaguer army was put to rout but the Swiss foot who stood their ground and held order were granted honourable terms. Mayenne's army was finished, however.
