Outcome : A victory for French Forces over German Imperial Forces

Summary

A narrow, and costly defeat for the Germans who attempted to wear down the French forces by attacking the salient around the fortress town of Verdun on the Meuse. Falkenhayn's objective was to force the French to pour their remaining strength into a defence of the salient which he knew they would never give up. The plan, however, backfired and although the Frence forces were nearly anihilated, the Germans too were critically weakened, and couldn't hold on against determined counter-attacks.
