Summary
After Napoleon's invasion of Spain and the fall of the Spanish ruling house many Spanish colonies rose in revolt. Francisco de Miranda was the first leader of the revolution but his forces were defeated and he was captured. The new leader Bolivar had initial successes but lost at La Puerta and fled the country. He returned in 1816 and finally broke the Spaniards at the Battle of Carabobo.
