Summary
Early successes over the two watchtower forts and the heavy bombardment of Azov itself all came to nought. The Russians failed to seal off the town from the sea or completely on land, they were short of experience and their lack of co-ordinated command all lead to an ignominious withdrawal.
Location
The fortress town of Azov was located at the mouth of the river Don where it enters the Sea of Azov.
