Summary

The French advanced guard came upon a force Würmser had left to protect his line of communication/supply. Immediate frontal attacks drove the Coalition troops out of position and the French cavalry then enveloped a large part of them. In all 1,500 were captured with 5 guns.

A village in north Italy on the river Brenta about 14 miles north of Bassano.

On the 5th September Würmser was moving south along the valley of the river Brenta towards Bassano. He sent Meszaros ahead via Vicenza towards Verona. He left a rearguard at Primolano. Bonaparte ordered Augereau and Massena to move east from Trento and follow the Austrians down the river Brenta.
